Text Box: ROY SCHATT: 1909-2002 Roy Schatt began his photo career in the late 40’s and early 50’s when his portraits of the cast members of Summer and Smoke in the Circle-in-the-Square-Theatre went on display in the theatre lobby and were published by Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. He shot many luminaries of the times, and developed a rapport and kinship with actors. From this, Lee Strasberg named him photographer for the famed Actor’s Studio in New York. During this time he was able to photograph many person- alities, including many sessions with James Dean shortly before his tragic death. His friendship with the actor resulted in photographs that are undoubtedly the crowning achievement of Schatt’s wonderful career. Many of these photographs become the most popular images ever taken of Dean. Our large collection includes many of the famous Dean shots, as well as extra-ordinary images of Marilyn Monroe, Steve McQueen, Tennessee Williams, Miles Davis, etc. We also have several cityscapes by the artist.
