CARE OF FINE PHOTOGRAPHY * As with all art, proper care and handling will increase the life of your photographs. Unique methods of creation may create unique vulnerabilities and durabilities. The following are guidelines only. Old or unique work may require special care and presentation. General Guidelines: Avoid hanging in direct sunlight to minimize fading and heat build up. Only archival, acid free mats should be used. Glass offers some protection from fingers, moisture, dust and UV light. All prints can be scratched or marked. Traditionally printed black and white photographs: Arguably the most archival of all photographic prints, a classically printed, selenium toned, B & W print on fiber based paper could potentially last hundreds of years by following the above guidelines. Traditionally printed color photographs: Materials vary, but claims of 80—100+ years are typical, given the above general guidelines are followed. These are prints produced using archival color dyes and papers. Be aware that older color prints will not have this longevity. Digitally printed photographs: Color copies or color printers not using photo quality inks or pigments are not archival. Photo materials are constantly improving and claims vary a lot, but typical photo ink claims 25 years and rising. UV inks and pigments claim in the 80 year range. All require a stable paper or canvas. Moisture will ruin these prints. Photos on Canvas: A unique situation occurs when someone chooses to display a print digitally printed on canvas, without glass. While special care must be taken to protect the print from moisture, scratching and UV light, it can be a stunning presentation. Our photographs on canvas use fine art canvas and archival inks. Because we want to retain the “painterly” quality of these prints, we display them without mats or glass. You may add these to your print if you wish. If you display the prints without glass as we do, avoid touching the surface. Do not rub or try to clean the surface. If needed, dust lightly with a soft feather-type duster. Proper care and handling will ensure your print will remain strong and beautiful for many years to come.
