CONTEST THEME Photography has never been static. It has been ever-changing throughout its history with new, fresh paths always available to the student of the art. It certainly has not stopped yet. It is an exciting time. The NEO AESTHETICS of photography embraces all the old techniques as well as those that are now pushing the boundaries into new areas of artistic endeavor. In this contest, we hope to showcase a wide variety of methods available to the modern photographer, and see how far we can go with the captured image. We offer no theme for what is to be in the photo, but rather invite you to create something special using any or all of the old methods and tools available — or making up new ones. This is Photography! and ANYTHING GOES! Wow! Our esteemed juror for this year’s contest is HUNTINGTON WITHERILL, acclaimed photographer, teacher, and author. See his extraordinary work and read his full bio at www.huntingtonwitherill.com.

WORKSHOPS
FUNDAMENTALS OF PHOTOGRAPHY Sat. April 25, 1-5 pm $45.00 Reservations required Dana A. Lyon & Sandra Sko Ogle, instructors
This popular workshop more comprehensively covers the fundamentals of photography. So while it may be good for someone just getting started, it is a great course for those working photographers who never confidently grasped the basics. It explains depth of field, exposure, and the f/stop/shutter speed relationship, as well as composition and aesthetics. It explains what the camera is doing in the various program modes and why you may prefer to shoot in manual mode. Basically, we plan to demystify those complicated cameras so the participant can take back artistic control. This workshop can be a refresher course, a head start for photography classes or a point in the right direction toward better photographs. $45.00 This course, or your personal experience, is a prerequisite to our series of light and lighting classes.
Limited class size, PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED.
************************* Light and Lighting I Workshop aka Friday Night Lights Friday May 15th, 7-10p.m. $45.00 per person Sorry - no walk ins Reservations are required Studio II Staff instructors
This workshop is a general lighting workshop. It is not just about studio lighting. We start with a description of the concepts to be covered and then move right to your working "hands on". As you work through various set up shots we will discuss the "qualities" of lighting. You'll practice metering as you adjust the lighting, adjust the exposure and learn to control the contrast. You do not need studio experience. But, you do need to bring your camera and know how to basically operate it. For this workshop we recommend a digital SLR because of its immediate feedback. Talk to us about your camera. If you have a tripod and/or a hand held meter - bring them.
Participants have ranged from students wanting a head start as they enter photo classes to working photographers who want to better understand lighting. This workshop won't make you a lighting expert, but it's a great start. Call for reservations/info.
*********************************** Light and Lighting II Workshop Friday May 29, 2009 7-10 pm $45.00 Sorry - no walk ins Reservations are required Studio II Staff instructors
This all new in 2008 workshop follows the same format as Lighting I but builds on what we've learned. We start with a short lecture/review of light, lighting, metering and exposure then quickly move to a series of set up workstations. These lighting situations will let you see and learn cause and effect as you adjust the various lighting set ups. Learn to meter and properly expose a back lite scene. How to control your TTL speedlight. Learn to create effective lighting and to affect creative lighting.
We are again recommending a digital SLR because of its immediate feedback. Talk to us about your camera. If you have a tripod, speedlight and/or a hand held meter - bring them. Talk to us if you have questions. Call for reservations/info.

ADVANCED DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY Chuck Stefanetti, Instructor Sat. June 27, 2009 10-5 $75.00 Sorry, no walk-ins Reservations Required
We are pleased to announce that we have made arrangements with our friend Chuck Stefanetti to instruct an Advanced Digital Photography class. This workshop will continue from where our Fundamentals Workshop left off. Using the typical shooting workflow as the framework, Chuck will take the class through how an experienced photographer might shoot a subject. The idea is to utilize the various controls available in most cameras, i.e. file size and type, manual adjustments including hyperfocal distances, menu adjustments (white balance, sharpening, color management), and histograms. A short shoot outside the studio followed up by a discussion on post shoot concerns —back ups, organizing and editing should exhaust you and the day. Chuck now lives in Paradise but was a long time resident of the Napa Valley. He taught a number of the advanced courses at Napa Valley College in addition to working locally as a photojournalist, a commercial photographer for the wine industry and photographing weddings. He is an exceptionally talented and popular teacher as well as being an excellent photographer. This class will run from 10 am until 1 pm, break for lunch, then return 2 pm until 5 pm. You should have completed our Fundamentals Workshop or be an experienced photographer to take this class. Please call with any questions. Bring your camera equipment and be prepared to go out for lunch, or bring a bag lunch.
******************************* Studio Lighting - coming soon Friday xxxxxxx 7-10 pm $45.00 per person Sorry - no walk ins Reservations will be required
This is an intermediate level, classroom setting, studio lighting workshop. This workshop will give you the training required to rent a studio. You'll learn to setup and meter the studio lighting used in classic and contemporary portrait photography including glamour/butterfly, short side, broad side, Rembrandt, side and back lit (silhouette) lighting techniques. Complexion flattering or dramatic lighting are artistic choices you control as you are shown how to meter each scene and choose the level of contrast. This course is also about learning to visualize the image and predict how changes in the lighting will effect it. Reservations are required. We recommend prior completion of the Fundamentals, Lighting I and Lighting II Workshops. Call with any questions. Thank you.
